 Info For Jersey City Testing Centers

To all community members: Jersey City has been at the forefront, leading the country in implementing strict social distancing measures. We thank you for your cooperation and understanding that all measures being enacted are in the best interest of your health and safety.

About COVID-19
The COVID-19 is a novel coronavirus, which is believed to have first emerged in Wuhan, China in December 2019. Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that can cause respiratory illness such as the common cold, or more severe illness such as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).

According to the CDC, current understanding about how the coronavirus spreads is largely based on what is known about similar coronaviruses. The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person, but it may be possible that a person can contract the illness by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or eyes.

Clinical presentation of confirmed cases of COVID-19 have ranged from mild symptoms to severe illness and death. Symptoms include fever, cough, and shortness of breath.
Prevention
Currently, there is no treatment or vaccine available to treat or prevent COVID-19, but the best way to protect yourself from contracting or spreading viruses is to practice social distancing and to follow good, common hygiene practices.

• Frequent hand washing w/ soap & water, or use 60% or greater alcohol-based hand sanitizer if no access to water.
• Discuss with your employer if telecommuting/working from home options are available.
• Store a two-week supply of water and food.
• Periodically check your regular prescription drugs to ensure a three-month supply in your home.
• Have any nonprescription drugs and other health supplies on hand, including pain relievers, stomach remedies, cough and cold medicines, fluids with electrolytes, and vitamins.
• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or sleeve when coughing or sneezing
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.
• Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
• If you are sick, stay home.

Flu activity remains high in NJ, and it is not too late to get the flu shot. The influenza vaccine does not protect against any coronavirus infection, but it can help keep you healthy during the flu season.
If you think you have symptoms
  • Call your health care provider.

  • To avoid overwhelming our medical facilities - if you believe you may be infected, do NOT use public transportation to our hospitals.  Call the hotline first 201-547-5208. City Health officials will provide further guidance.

  • For those employees in the Department of Public Safety with any possible concerns of systems and/or exposure to the virus, please defer to the Chiefs of Police and Fire accordingly, and follow all proper protocols as has already been disseminated to you.

  • For all non-emergency and non-violent calls for police service, residents are urged to call (201) 547-5477 where an officer will generate an official report that will be made available to you within five days.

Post Test FAQs
Now that you’ve had your Coronavirus COVID-19 test, you may have questions.
We hope to answer them here, so that you know what to expect next.

  • Upon completion of your test today, the samples are brought directly
    to Reference Lab in Elmwood Park for processing.
  • The Jersey City Department of Health also receives these results and will
    follow up with all who test within 3-5 days.
We assure you that we are committed to testing as many Jersey City residents as possible. We are working as quickly as possible to provide results, ease your mind and execute a plan of action to preserve health in Jersey City.

Please DO NOT call the reservation line to follow up, as it only clogs our phone lines, keeping our staff from serving those who want to be tested going forward.

You will be hearing from us as soon as possible.
  • If you have an urgent health emergency, like difficulty breathing, we recommend you call 911.
  • If you have medical questions, or other difficulty, consult with your doctor.
