Parks and Green Space

With nearly 60 different parks, families visiting Jersey City can spend a day in the sun enjoying their favorite outdoor activity or relax in a beautifully landscaped and shady nook of one of our historic neighborhood parks.

Lincoln Park and Liberty State Park are the largest public open space areas in the city. Once a crumbling railway hub, Liberty State Park is over 1, 200 acres on which families can spend the day biking, walking, running, playing, flying kites, picnicing, playing sports, fishing, crabbing, or sightseeing along the Hudson River Walkway. Liberty State Park is home to some of the region's most vital wetlands, providing a year round sanctuary for a wide variety of wildlife, fish and birds. In fall, winter and spring, the Park is a significant stop and nesting site for many species of migratory birds, including the great snowy owl.

You can board a ferry and take your family on a tour of historic Ellis Island, where generations of immigrants landed, intent on making a new and better life for themselves and their families.  Climb to the crown of the Statue of Liberty and enjoy the sweeping vistas of New York Harbor.  Stop by the Liberty Science Center or catch the Hudson Bergen Lightrail to Exchange Place and have lunch at Owen Grundy Pier. Explore the streets where the Battle of Paulus Hook was fought or walk north and stroll the Victorian gardens of Van Vorst Park and view some of Jersey City's most beautiful and historic architectural gems.

Even with all its parklands, Jersey City is still adding acres of green space by innovatively finding new uses for historically significant and beautiful 19th century infrastructure. On February 15, 2007, Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy announced that the long defunct Jersey City Reservoir #3 would officially become one of Jersey City's newest parks. A walled-in urban meadow, lake, and wetlands, Reservoir #3 is a local favorite for
jogging, fishing, hiking and kayaking.
